Livingston County Sheriff Steve Cox advises of another creature and a potential hazard for motorists, especially motorcyclists.

The sheriff’s office found an adult armadillo as road kill on the side of Highway 36 east of Chillicothe on June 9.  Cox says neither he nor officers with the department have seen armadillos in the area before June 9.

Armadillos are endemic to Missouri, but their habitat is primarily in the southern half of the state. However, a few individuals have been reported as far north as the Missouri-Iowa state line. The armadillo’s northward range is limited by cold weather. If you would like to know more about armadillos, you can find information on them at either this link or on the Missouri Department of Conservation website.
