Collision on Highway 61 near New London sends one to hospital by helicopter

A collision occurred on Highway 61 near New London, Missouri, on December 12, 2023, at 2:10 p.m. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a 2011 GMC Acadia, driven by 93-year-old Virginia M. Ogle from Center, Missouri, collided with a 2020 Hyundai Elantra, driven by 22-year-old Gavin T. Golden from Hannibal, Missouri.

The accident happened as the GMC Acadia, traveling westbound, attempted to make a right turn onto northbound Highway 61 and was struck by the Hyundai Elantra, which was heading northbound. Gavin Golden, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, suffered serious injuries and was transported by Survival Flight Helicopter to University Hospital in Columbia.

Virginia Ogle, who was wearing a seat belt, did not sustain any injuries reported at the scene. Both vehicles suffered significant damage, with the Hyundai Elantra being totally damaged and the GMC Acadia sustaining extensive damage. The vehicles were towed from the scene by Roberts Garage.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol, assisted by Corporal Tappendorf, Master Sergeant Koch, the Ralls County Sheriff’s Department, and local fire and police departments from New London and Hannibal, responded to the crash.
