In a late-night incident on Highway 36, approximately 2.5 miles east of Macon, Missouri, a 2002 Toyota RAV 4 was involved in an accident that resulted in the hospitalization of two individuals. The crash occurred at around 11:00 p.m. on March 11, 2024, when the driver, Michelle L. Schwanke, 50, of New London, Missouri, lost control of the vehicle. The SUV veered off the left side of the road, struck a guardrail, and overturned, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The occupants of the vehicle included Charles A. Evans, 45, from Quincy, Illinois, who suffered serious injuries, and a 13-year-old girl from New London, Missouri, who sustained minor injuries. Reports indicate that Evans was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.  The teenager, however, was not using a seat belt.

Both injured parties were transported for medical treatment following the incident. The young girl was taken by Macon County Ambulance to Samaritan Hospital in Macon for her injuries. Meanwhile, Evans required air evacuation to University Hospital in Columbia due to the severity of his condition.

Schwanke’s vehicle sustained total damage and was towed from the site by Still Towing in Macon.

The accident prompted a significant response from local emergency services, including the Macon County Sheriff’s Office and Macon County Rural Fire Department, who assisted at the scene.
