Spring activities are ramping up at Missouri’s state parks and historic sites, offering a variety of outdoor events to welcome the warmer weather.

  1. Spring Work Day at Crowder State Park: On Saturday, March 16, at 8 a.m., volunteers are invited to Crowder State Park’s Camp Grand River Recreation Hall for a Spring Work Day. Weather permitting, activities may include indoor tasks such as cleaning dishes, floors, tables, and chairs, or outdoor tasks like clearing downed trees, removing exotic plants, maintaining trails, and painting buildings. Donuts and water will be provided, though participants are encouraged to bring additional water and snacks. Volunteers should come prepared with work gloves and wear suitable clothing and footwear. Crowder State Park is located at 76 NW Highway 128 in Trenton. For more details, interested individuals can contact the park at 660-359-6473.
  2. St. Patrick’s Day Scavenger Hunt at Crowder State Park: Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a scavenger hunt on Sunday, March 17, at 5 p.m. Participants should meet at the Shelter 3 parking lot to begin their adventure along a section of the Tall Oaks Trail. Prizes will be awarded to the adult and child who discover the most items. This free event is open to the public, with no registration required. Attendees are advised to dress appropriately for the weather and bring water and a snack.
  3. Last Day of Winter Hike at Crowder State Park: Mark the end of winter with a guided hike on Monday, March 18, at 9 a.m. Hikers will meet at the tennis courts before embarking on a 2-mile journey along the Redbud Trail. This is an opportunity to enjoy the park’s landscape before spring foliage limits visibility. Comfortable, weather-appropriate attire and footwear are recommended, along with water and snacks.
  4. Dark Sky Program at Thousand Hills State Park: The inaugural Dark Sky Program event will take place on Friday, March 22, from 8 to 10 p.m. Participants will join park staff and Truman State University faculty at the park’s Point Shelter for a night of stargazing. While telescopes will be provided, attendees are welcome to bring their own, along with chairs, blankets, and binoculars. Thousand Hills State Park is situated at 20431 State Highway 157 in Kirksville.
