The U.S. Defense Department agency has announced the identification of the remains of U.S. Army Corporal Julius Wolfe, from Liberal in southwest Missouri.

On June 6, 1944, Wolfe was killed, along with approximately 200 other service members, en route to Normandy, France. The ship they were aboard struck an underwater mine as it steamed toward the shore. It burst into flames after being hit by enemy fire, which caused an explosion that ignited the ship’s fuel storage and instantly killed everyone in the troop compartment.

Wolfe served in Company B, 149th Engineer Combat Battalion in the European Theater. He was 20 years old at the time of his death.

Wolfe will be buried in Liberal at a later date.
