An accident involving a sports utility vehicle sinking into an ice-covered pond five miles north of Winigan on Friday evening claimed the life of a New Boston man.

The body of 65-year-old James Cook was transported to the Ruschmeier Funeral Home in Milan. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Sullivan County Coroner Bob Wyant about 10 minutes after the accident.

The sports utility vehicle traveled south on Highway 129 before running off the right side of the road on to the pond. The Patrol notes Cook did not wear a seat belt.

Assistance was provided by the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office and Ambulance as well as Green City Fire Department.
