North Central Missouri College Upward Bound (UB) high school students from Trenton, Galt, Hamilton, Gallatin, Chillicothe, and Jamesport recently spent five weeks on the NCMC campus participating in academically and culturally enhancing activities through the UB Summer Component.

Upward Bound is a college-prep program designed to assist participants in their preparation for college through academic, mentoring, cultural enrichment, and financial literacy activities. Each summer, Upward Bound students live on the North Central Missouri College campus and participate in activities designed to prepare them for higher education.

“Upward Bound provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for local high school students, said Janet Pultz-Trio Director.” “Not only do they improve their academic skills and get a taste of college life, but they also travel, meet new friends, and have some truly unique experiences.”

Some of the activities included academic classes ranging from Spanish, History, Biology, Chemistry, Math, Creative Writing, Art, and Computer Coding designed to prepare them for the next year of school and beyond. Recent UB high school graduates enrolled in NCMC college courses where they were able to receive mentoring, tutoring, and enrollment assistance. Students also participated in college visits, cultural trips, and team-building activities. At the end of the summer component, participants went on a six-day trip to Orange Beach Alabama with stops also at the US Space and Rocket Center and the Naval Aviation Museum.

Upward Bound will soon be recruiting in their service area school districts (Trenton, Galt, Hamilton, Gallatin, Chillicothe, Jamesport) for incoming participants.
