A Missouri House committee could vote this week on a proposed public vote targeting transgender high school athletes.

If approved by voters, transgender athletes would have to participate in sports based on their biological sex and females could no longer play football with their male teammates, for instance. During a public hearing, Yukon State Representative Robert Ross says his measure is meant to be fair to all high school athletes.

On the flip side, Olivette Democrat Tracy McCreery says playing sports teaches kids cooperation, team spirit and can keep them out of trouble. She says competition is competition.

A Missouri House committee could vote this week on his resolution. Ross says the proposal is not meant to take opportunities away from individuals, but instead keep the competition fair for female athletes competing against biological males.

Brandon Boulware of Kansas City says the resolution would squash his 10-year-old transgender daughter’s spirit by taking away her opportunity to play
girls volleyball and belong to a team.
