Two hurt in crash on Highway 65, one life-flighted

Drivers of two vehicles were injured yesterday in an accident at Lineville.

The highway patrol listed injuries as serious for 63-year-old Jackie Kostka of Des Moines who was flown by a medical helicopter (Mercy 1) to the Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.  The other driver, 58-year-old Lawrence Devitt of Lineville, Iowa was taken by ambulance to Wayne County, Iowa hospital in Corydon with moderate injuries.

An investigative officer reported Devitt was northbound on Highway 65 passing another vehicle when the one he was driving skidded and struck the oncoming southbound car driven by Ms. Kostka. After impact, Devitt’s vehicle spun around coming to a stop facing south off the west side of the highway.

The report noted extrication equipment was used to remove Jackie Kostka from her car. Both of the vehicles were demolished in the accident about 11:10 Monday morning in northern Mercer County. Both drivers were using seat belts.

Assisting the highway patrol were the sheriff’s departments of Mercer County and from Wayne County, Iowa; Lineville Fire District; Mercer County and Wayne County, Iowa first responders.
