Fire Saturday afternoon destroyed a home on Route C in southern Mercer County.

Mercer County Fire Protection District Chief Tony Johnson said members of the Begley family got out safely. Although the cause of the fire was not determined, Johnson quoted a resident as saying it was believed the blaze started as a flue fire.

Firefighters were on the scene for about four and one-half hours. Johnson reported the Mercer, Medicine Creek, Spickard, and Grundy County Rural departments brought water to the scene.

The house was a rental property and the owner’s name was not available. No injuries were reported.
