Wastewater treatment plant improvements, required by the state, will be on the agenda for an upcoming meeting of the Trenton City Council.

Members of the Utility committee Tuesday night reviewed the design-build contract on the effluent disinfection project. City Administrator Ron Urton reports the council, next Monday night, is to consider an engineering agreement with the Burns and McDonnell Company.

At previous meetings, Burns and McDonnell have projected various improvements at an estimated cost of $4,700,000 which covers the first phase of what could be two phases for needed improvements. Officials have said the design-build concept allows the project to move quickly to meet a completion deadline that the city and Department of Natural Resources agreed too.

Urton and Jeff Barnard of the engineering firm met last week in Jefferson City with DNR officials to review the scope of work for the sewer project. A preliminary engineering plan has been approved by the state. Also discussed with DNR was the Trenton water plants’ corrosion control efforts as the city wants to assist property owners who may have lead in water service lines.

The committee was updated on a possible agreement involving utility pole attachments should Mid States Services proceed with making fiber optics high-speed internet available to customers in Trenton.  Mid-States has been conducting an online survey to determine whether there’s local support before pursuing such a project.

Urton stated use of utility poles is subject to an agreement that is not yet finalized, however, selected poles would receive additional overhead wiring to accommodate fiber optics.
