A change in city ordinance has been recommended after the Administrative Committee last night heard from citizens who requested a repeal of Trenton’s ban on specific breeds of dogs.

The current ordinance prohibits within the city limits; Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Chow Chow, Akita, and Doberman Pincher dogs. That ordinance was adopted by the City Council in August of 2006. The administrative committee is recommending the dog specific breed ordinance be repealed. A document to that effect is to be presented for consideration by the Trenton City Council. It also was pointed out Trenton still has a vicious dog ordinance which involves any breed.

The discussion was held Tuesday night among committee members and city officials on wiring needed at the emergency services complex to accommodate fiber optic high-speed internet and a telephone upgrade using voice over internet protocol (VOIP).

The city owns the complex housing the fire departments and county ambulance service.

City Administrator Ron Urton said one quote of nearly $11,000 was received. But another is sought for a comparison along with ways to possibly reduce costs. A similar project at the law enforcement center is the county’s expense due to Grundy county owning the building housing the police and sheriff’s departments.

With plans by MoDOT to advertise in May for bids on a Highway 6 overlay project through Trenton in 2019, Urton said the committee decided to postpone discussion on the city possibility assuming the right of way maintenance from MoDOT. He noted costs would be incurred regarding storm drains and grates that are at the edges of the street. Urton added discussions with MoDOT could resume in several years with the next paving cycle.
