The North Central Missouri College Student Senate has announced the NCMC Family of the Year, who will be recognized on January 22, 2020, during Homecoming and Alumni Appreciation Day activities at the Ketcham Community Center.

The 2019-2020 NCMC Family of the Year is the Houston family of Birmingham, Alabama.  Demetrius and Arnetra Houston were nominated by their son and current NCMC Pirate, Demarius, who is a sophomore on the Men’s basketball team and made the trip to the NJCAA National Tournament in 2019.  The oldest son, Demetrius Jr., was a Pirate and on the NCMC Men’s basketball team from 2015-2017.  The Houston’s also have two daughters, Demetria and Breaunna.

“My parents have always stressed being an excellent student before anything, and I have always driven myself that way.  The unconditional support they have shown through my time in college has been very helpful, and I’m blessed to have that.” wrote Demarius in his nomination application.

“My parents always taught me to treat others how you want to be treated, no matter the color, race, religion, etc.  I am the person I am today because of them. I think this award would show how great they have been to me and acknowledge the support they have shown to NCMC.  They deserve this award for things they have done and continue to do.  No matter if they win the award or not, their unconditional support will be appreciated.”

Recognition of the NCMC Family of the Year will take place between the Lady Pirates and Pirates games on January 22, 2020.  This is the second year for Homecoming returning to campus and the second year for a Family of the Year to be honored.  “The Houston family have demonstrated incredible support for their children while pursuing their education at NCMC. The Houston’s personifies the values of the college, including integrity, dignity, respect, and support. We are happy their sons chose NCMC, and we are grateful for the support demonstrated by Demetrius and Arnetra,” commented Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Kristen Alley. The Family of the Year award is sponsored by the NCMC Student Senate and NCMC Student Affairs; nominations were solicited from current students.

The Lady Pirates and Pirates will play against the Metropolitan Community College Wolves with the women tipping off at 5:00 p.m. and the men at 7:00 p.m.  Additional activities include a pre-game tailgate sponsored by BTC Bank of Trenton and Smithfield Hog Production – Missouri, NCMC Dance Wave performing during half-time of the Lady Pirates game and coronation during half-time for the Pirates game.  Alumni classes will be recognized throughout the evening, as well as NCMC student organizations and student-athletes.
