With Thursday’s cancellation of school, the Trenton R-9 district has now missed six days during the 2018-19 school year. That includes one last fall for the girl’s softball tournament held in Springfield plus five missed days due to winter weather.

That includes three this week, one last week, and one in late November.

In today’s case, Superintendent Dan Wiebers said road condition evaluations this morning by bus drivers indicated their concerns for traveling on rural secondary roads. Trenton had announced last night a two-hour delay in the start of classes with buses limited to hard surface roads only. But at 7:30 this morning, Trenton changed and decided to cancel classes. Pleasant View R-6 also did the same this morning at 7:30 and called off school for today.

Superintendent Wiebers said the six days missed are to be made up as the rule requiring 174 attendance days is still in effect for the current term. Governor parson signed a bill last summer changing the requirement to at 1044 hours of instruction, effective with the next school year, 2019-2020.

The new state law is intended to allow school districts more flexibility in making up missed instructional time during times they already are in session rather than tacking on days at the end of the school year in May.

Because of the days already missed during the current school term, Wiebers said Trenton’s last day of classes is as of now, Wednesday, May 22nd
