Missouri has taken a step toward being compliant with the Federal Real ID Act of 2005 with the passage of House Bill 151.

Missouri Department of Revenue Legislative Director Mark Siettmann reports other steps will need to be taken in the next 18 months to make Missouri’s driver’s licenses and non-drivers identification cards fully compliant.

The state will need an enforcement waiver extension from the U. S. Department of Homeland Security.

Siettmann says drivers licenses and non-drivers identification cards will be accepted on military bases once the request is granted, and the January 2018 deadline for air travel will no longer be enforced.

Current Missouri identification will be accepted for the duration of the extension.

He explains that the Department of Revenue will begin the process of certification with the Department of Homeland Security once House Bill 151 goes into effect, which is August 28th.

Siettmann says Missouri residents should treat renewals and new license requests as they have in the past.

The Department of Revenue will notify the public about requesting compliant drivers licenses or non-drivers identification cards when they can be issued.
