Livingston County Sheriff Steve Cox reports his office has recently seen a “significant jump” in the number of its detainees. He says that late last week, the office had a total of 58 detainees in custody, and 22 of them were women.

The sheriff and Captain Sindy Thomas note the 22 women in custody is likely the highest number of female detainees at one time in the history of the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office. Cox explains a big reason for the jump in the number of detainees is defendants on bond allegedly violating their bond and being rearrested, new criminal acts, mental health issues, and drugs, which are mostly methamphetamine-related.

Cox and Thomas report that before the Livingston County Jail closed, it reached a population of 76 detainees in custody. The Livingston County Jail was a 48-bed facility.

Cox says the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office will continue to work with area counties on holding Livingston County detainees. He comments that, even with the increased numbers, it is still a “huge” overall savings for Livingston County taxpayers.
