The Chillicothe Fire Department responded to three calls, a structure fire, and two grass fires, within a three hour period on Tuesday.

At 4:30 Tuesday afternoon, Chillicothe firefighters went to a grass fire at Routes O and N of Livingston County where approximately 30 large bales of hay were burning.

It was noted by those at the scene that the field had been on fire before bales got ignited.

The owner used a tractor and implement to disk around the bales as firefighters stood by while the blaze in the hay burned itself out. The owner was listed as Zack McClellan of 11068 Highway O at Chillicothe.

At 5 o’clock Tuesday, the department went to a location at 14650 Route CC.  When firefighters arrived at the house owned by Willie Hibner of Chillicothe, farmers were fighting two small grass fires and it was getting away from them with concerns increasing that it may spread to a house and shed.

After the fire was contained, the farmers were to continue to monitor the fire that burned about two acres.

Just past 6:30 last night, firefighters went to 823 Jansen in Chillicothe were fire was seen on the north exterior of the house. Approximately 800 gallons of water and a foam mix was used to extinguish the fire. Damage was confined to the north exterior and basement floor joist. Significant smoke damage was noted throughout the house owned by Mike Dennis of Trenton.

The occupant was listed as Barbra Evans.  No one was home at the time of the fire at the time it was reported by neighbors.

Chief Darrell Wright said the cause of the fire is undetermined but is to be investigated by the fire marshal’s office.
