With the beginning of the next fiscal year May 1, the city of Trenton has scheduled a budget meeting for next Tuesday night, April 18.

The 6:30 evening meeting involves members of the finance committee, however, it’s possible other council members may attend to hear and/or participate in the discussion.

The meeting will be open to the public.

The first item of business will be to elect a finance committee chairman then the budget discussion is scheduled.

This meeting comes after the City Council, on a split vote Monday night of 2 to 5, failed to override a veto by Mayor Nick McHargue. Although he presided at the March 27 council meeting when the council voted 7 to 1 to adopt the budgets, Mayor McHargue did not sign ordinances for the city and the municipal utility budgets.

It’s anticipated that a salary increase for city employees may be part of the committee discussion at the Tuesday meeting. No increases were recommended in the previous budgets presented.

Finance committee members, as appointed earlier this week by the Mayor, are Travis Elbert, Larry Porter, Brad Chumbley, and Larry Crawford.

Elbert is the only hold over member from the previous finance committee that developed the initial budgets following a series of public meetings.
