In northwest Missouri’s Nodaway County, the Highway Patrol reports a van struck the rear of a school bus Monday afternoon while it was letting students off the bus three miles east of Barnard.

The patrol reports one student, 12-year-old Ashlyn Mires of Conception Junction received a minor injury and was treated at the scene and released.

The driver of the van, 37-year-old Kevin Thomas the Second of St. Joseph received moderate injuries and was transported by ambulance to Mosaic Life Care Hospital in St. Joseph.

Troopers noted the eastbound school bus was stopped with its emergency equipment activated when it was struck in the rear. The bus driver was listed as 61-year-old Roger Nelson of Guilford, who wasn’t hurt in the accident.

The report indicated the van was demolished while moderate damage was noted for the bus. Both drivers were using safety devices.
