Two teenagers dead, three injured in crash on Caldwell County road

Two teenage boys from Polo were killed and three others were injured Sunday night when a car left a southern Caldwell County road and overturned.

The victims, both of whom were 14 years old, were pronounced dead at the scene by the Caldwell County Coroner. The highway patrol no longer releases names of juveniles in their accident reports.

Injured in the accident about 7:15 Sunday night was another 14-year-old boy from Polo who was flown by Life Flight Eagle to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City with serious injuries. Moderate injuries were reported for the driver, 18-year-old Harley Sammons of Plattsburg who was taken by ambulance to Liberty Hospital. Also with moderate injuries was another passenger, 20-year-old Seth Pate of Polo who was transported by ambulance to North Kanas City Hospital. The two bodies were taken by the coroner to Frontier Forensics in Kansas City, Kansas.

The accident report shows NONE of the five young people was using seat belts.

Troopers reported the car, a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze, was eastbound on Price Drive when it skidded on gravel, traveled off the left side of the road, and struck a ditch. The vehicle then went airborne, traveling through a fence, and overturning twice coming to rest on its top. The car was demolished in the wreck one and a half miles south of Polo.
