The Trenton R-9 School District reports children ages 18 and younger can eat breakfast and lunch for FREE on weekdays from May 29th through June 28th. Those are the dates of the Trenton R-9 Summer School presented by Catapult Learning.

Director of Supportive Services Kris Ockenfels reports the free breakfast and lunch will be available to kids in the Trenton area regardless if they attend summer school classes. Held at Rissler elementary school, breakfast is from 7:30 to 7:45 and the lunch period goes from 10:45 until noon. Menus for each day are posted to the Trenton R-9 School District website.

Ockenfels explained the meals are free because of the “seamless summer” food program. It’s an extension of the National School Lunch program. The summer program allows all children to eat free in communities that have at least 50 percent of the children eligible for “free or reduced-price meals” during the regular school year.

The school district receives government reimbursement on the costs of the kids’ meal program. Bus transportation will again be provided for summer school students.

Catapult Learning covers the transportation expenses and the “summer journey curriculum.”  Twenty-three days of instruction are provided.

Summer School personnel are staffed through the Trenton R-9 School District and Catapult. The school district has a contract with Catapult.
