It makes sense for businesses to promote their employees to supervisory roles because of their technical expertise—but good technical skills do not necessarily make someone a good supervisor. No matter the workplace, issues like communication, conflict, working as a team, personality differences, generational differences, and legal issues abound.
Across workplaces, whether that’s the farm, the factory, or the office, those differences in generational tendencies create some challenges during the “changing of the guard”, when baby boomers retire and younger employees take their place. These issues and more will be addressed at a series of supervisory and leadership skills training programs offered by the University of Missouri Extension.
The program, the “supervisory certificate series”, will be offered each Wednesday in February (5, 12, 19, and 26) from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Northwest Technical School in Maryville.
Session topics include how to better understand personality and generational differences in order to build relationships that are more effective; legal responsibilities in the workplace; strategies for communicating more successfully; how you as a leader can empower your teams to be higher performing; the steps for resolving conflicts; and, the process for coaching employees.
The material for this course was developed by the award-winning trainers at the Missouri Training Institute, part of MU Extension and housed in the University of Missouri’s Robert J. Trulaske, Sr. College of Business, and delivered by MU Extension regional faculty.
The fee for attending all six sessions is $875 per person; a full-day session is $280, and a half-day session is $140. Upon completion of the entire series, participants will receive a certificate of completion. Continuing education credits are also available upon request.
