St. Joseph man shot by homeowner during attempted burglary

(St. Joseph News Press) – A man was taken to the hospital late Thursday after he was shot at a home on Jackson Street.

Police received a burglary in progress call around 10:10 p.m. from the owner of 2219 Jackson St., who said the man was trying to break into their home when they shot him. Sgt. Jayson Person of the St. Joseph Police Department said when officers arrived, they found one man with a gunshot wound.

Only one shot was fired, and Person said just one person was reportedly trying to break in.

The suspect was taken from the home on a stretcher and transported to the hospital via ambulance. The severity of the gunshot wound was not immediately known, but Person said he was conscious when he was taken to the hospital.

Police are still investigating the incident.
