The American Red Cross urges healthy donors to give blood this flu season to ensure a blood supply for patients in need.

The Red Cross reports donors of all blood types, especially O, are needed after hurricanes Michael and Florence forced the cancellation of around 200 blood drives, which caused about 7,000 units of blood and platelets to go uncollected. Donors can give blood and platelets if they feel well.

The organization encourages donors to get flu vaccines and notes there is no waiting period to give blood after receiving a flu shot as long as the donor is symptom and fever-free.

Donors can schedule an appointment to give blood by visiting the Red Cross website or calling 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
