A Princeton man was killed and a Unionville resident hurt in the collision of a car and a Mack truck on Highway 136 at Ravanna early Wednesday morning.

Fatally injured was the driver of the car, 37-year-old Thomas Gavigan of Princeton.

The driver of the truck, 44-year-old John Campbell of Unionville was transported to Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville with moderate injuries.

The accident happened shortly before 6 o’clock Wednesday morning on Highway 136 at Ravanna as Gavigan was eastbound in the car and Campbell was traveling west in the truck when the eastbound car crossed the centerline, went onto the westbound shoulder, swerved back to the right and traveled into a turn lane. The westbound truck swerved in an attempt to miss the car, but the vehicles collided in the turn lane of Highway 136.

The car was demolished and the truck sustained moderate damage. Campbell was wearing a seatbelt but Gavigan was not.

Thomas Gavigan was pronounced dead at the scene and is the first traffic fatality this year in Mercer County.
