The Polo R-7 School District has implemented its Crisis Plan this week following a vehicle accident in southern Caldwell County Sunday that killed two teens from Polo.

Middle School and High School Principal Jonathon Pickrell provided information that shows the plan involves guidelines for understanding and responding to a crisis, including emotions teachers may observe in their students or themselves, such as numbness, shock, denial, confusion, fear, grief, anxiety, depression, guilt, and anger.

The guidelines also involve changes that may be seen in behavior, including lack of concentration or interest in usual activities, greater dependency, sleeping or eating problems, and being overly quiet or talkative.

The Crisis Plan explains some ways to help students include letting them share positive experiences they had, be supportive and helping each other, walk around the campus, and write letters or make cards to express sympathy to families.

Tips for students are also provided, which include not being afraid to ask for help with coping, taking care of themselves, and several ways to help them handle stress and grief.

Pickrell says a classroom has been set up for students to speak to counselors if they feel the need, and the Polo School District has set up a memorial board.

Due to confidentiality, he did not release the names of the teens who died in Sunday’s accident.
