A Hannibal man died and a Pittsfield, Illinois woman sustained moderate injuries as the result of a chain-reaction crash involving four vehicles near Carrollton on Friday afternoon.

The body of 57-year-old Bradley Griggs was transported to Frontier Forensics. He was pronounced dead on the scene by Carroll County Chief Deputy Erik Dempsey about five minutes after the accident.

Emergency medical services transported 46-year-old Candice Smothers to Carroll County Memorial Hospital of Carrollton. The other drivers, 40-year-old Kyle Durham of Norborne and 74-year-old Larry Strait of Warrensburg were reported as not injured.

A pickup truck driven by Griggs failed to slow for traffic in a construction zone on southbound U. S. Highway 24 at Highway 10 before overtaking and striking a car driven by Smothers. That caused the car to be pushed into a pickup truck driven by Durham and that truck to be pushed into a sport utility vehicle driven by Strait.

The Patrol notes Griggs did not wear a safety device, while the other drivers did.

The Carrollton Police Department and Carroll County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene of the crash.
