A northwest Missouri woman was pronounced dead Saturday evening nearly ten hours after a traffic accident north of Savannah.

Fatally injured was 21-year old Haylee Smither of Amazonia who was a passenger in a car driven by 19-year old Keith Ellis of St. Joseph. Ellis received what the highway patrol called moderate injuries.

Both individuals were transported to Mosiac Life Care at St. Joseph where Smither later was pronounced deceased.

The accident happened Saturday morning three miles north of Savannah on Highway 71 when the northbound car went off the left side of the road, returned to the pavement, went off the right side of the road, became airborne, hit the ground, and overturned several times, throwing Smither from the vehicle. The car came to rest on its passenger side on top of the woman.

The vehicle was demolished and the patrol said neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt.
