North Central Missouri College Board of Trustees meet with full agenda

The North Central Missouri College Board of Trustees approved multiple hires, a new position, and a resignation at its meeting Tuesday evening.

The board hired Eric Christopherson of Columbia as a full-time mathematics and physics instructor and Cassie Cordray of Laredo as a full-time teacher education instructor and to teach a few adjunct classes this summer. Their positions officially begin August 15th. The board hired Laura Handke of Atchison, Kansas as an adjunct instructor for agriculture courses at the North Belt Center in Country Club beginning this fall.

Approved internal transfers included Kelly Claycomb of Ridgeway as full-time Practical Nursing to Associates Degree in Nursing and Health Sciences Director on an 11-month contract and Korynn Skipper of Spickard as full-time Practical Nursing and Health Sciences Director on a ten-month contract. The positions will begin July 1st. Claycomb and Skipper have been serving as interim directors since February.

The board approved the request for the new position of Admissions Processor. The position will report to the Admissions Director, and the salary will range from $9.95 to $11.95 per hour. The position will be advertised and will be included in the 2018-2019 budget.

The board approved the resignation of full-time Green Hills Head Start Brookfield Center Teacher/Family Service Advocate Jamie Matheny. Her expected last day of employment will be July 31st.

The board approved the Green Hills Head Start’s Public Complaint Policy and Internal Dispute Resolution Procedure, which Director Doctor Beverly Hooker said were unchanged from the current policies.

Proposed minor changes were approved to the Tuition Waiver Policy in the board policy manual to reflect current practice.

The board approved the one-year extension of the college’s licensing contract, the Microsoft Campus Agreement, for $46,291.70. Chief Information Officer Alan Barnett said NCMC is required to use the same reseller, Insight of Tempe, Arizona, for the extension. He reported Microsoft announced changes in the Campus Agreement, which will increase the overall licensing cost. The college can avoid the cost increase for one additional year with the contract extension. Barnett said Information Technology Services will reduce the number of user accounts and servers to help mitigate the cost increases.

The board approved a request for a special meeting with the NCMC Foundation Board of Directors. The meeting will be held at the Barton Farm Campus the evening of May 17th at 5:30.  A meal will be provided.

Board secretary Vicki Weaver administered the oath of office to board members Robert Maloney and Don Dalrymple. The board elected Don Dalrymple as president, Diane Lowrey as vice president, Vicki Weaver as secretary, and Tyson Otto as treasurer.

President Doctor Lenny Klaver gave an update on the legislature. He said Governor Greitens indictments are “unfortunate”. He noted the constitutional deadline to pass the state budget is May 11th, but withholdings can still go into effect until after the veto session.

Klaver attended the National Junior College Athletic Association Annual Conference Presidents Council Meeting in Colorado Springs. He reported the NJCAA has adopted a new governance structure, which involves one representative from each of the 24 regions being elected to a board chair to serve their region. Other elected positions will include a women’s and a men’s senior administrator, and a possible at-large position.

Klaver congratulated Lady Pirates golfer Hannah Bracken for qualifying for the NJCAA National Tournament, which will be held in Mesa, Arizona May 14th through 17th. He also congratulated the recipients of faculty and staff awards, which were presented Tuesday afternoon. Those recipients included Beth Caldarello receiving a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Saint Louis University and Jenni Croy being named as the NJCAA Region 16 Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year.

Employee spotlights so far this year include Nate Gamet, Hilary Cooksey, Shellee Castanada, Lola Swint, Craig Sager, Joni Oaks, Jamie Cunningham, Dennis Sager, Melissa Sims, and Sarah Bird.

Jeanie Griffin received a service award for 30 years of service. Faculty and staff serving five and ten years were also recognized. Tenure was awarded to Annett Pool and Doctor Beth Caldarello. The Spirit Award went to Jayne Meservey. Nate Gamet and Maryellen Harman received the Shipley Excellence in Assessment Award. The National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development Award went to Doctor Beth Caldarello. Lola Swint received the Top Sail Award. The Allnut Award went to Shellee Castanada. The Brown Pushkarsky Award went to Tina Totten. Jack Green received the Nowland Advisor Award.

Klaver reported there were 21 attendees at the NCMC Educators Forum at the Barton Farm Campus Friday. He said 14 of the 17 school administrators attending were superintendents.

Klaver also presented FFA State Proficiency Awards at the FFA Convention in Columbia Thursday. He said former NCMC softball coach Nan Carter received the Lifetime Achievement Award in the Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame. Klaver reported summer enrollment is up 37 compared to this time last year, and fall enrollment is up 38. He said some students are transferring back to NCMC.

The main transfer-in colleges include Missouri Western University with 27 transfers in and Northwest Missouri State University with 22. Metro Community College is third on the list, Moberly Area Community College is fourth, and the University of Missouri—Kansas City is fifth.

Klaver noted Senator Roy Blunt will visit the NCMC campus in Trenton to discuss Pell Grants and student financial aid. The visit will be the afternoon of May 1st starting around 1 o’clock.

Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Doctor Kristen Alley reported new Student Senate officers were elected. Jamee Scearce is Student Senate president, Pharon Pilgrim is vice president, and Grant Bennett is Associate in Arts—Trenton. Alley said resident assistants have also been chosen. She noted an orientation will be held at the North Belt Center Thursday.

Alley announced that a commencement ceremony for baseball players will be held in the Ketcham Community Center the afternoon of May 3rd at 3 o’clock. She said a rehearsal for the other commencements will be held May 4th. Commencements will be held at the Ketcham Community Center May 5th at 9 o’clock in the morning and 1 o’clock in the afternoon. Alley said this year’s graduating class is NCMC’s third largest. She added that 440 degrees and certificates will be awarded to 420 graduates.

Chief Information Officer Alan Barnett gave a presentation on the Information Technology Departments progress and future goals. He noted all positions are currently filled. He said internet services are provided by two data centers, and student email service and identification management is in the cloud. Barnett would like to move email services and ID management for administration to the cloud as well.

Green Hills Head Start Director Beverly Hooker reported interviewing for open positions at the Head Start locations will begin in June. She said enrollment numbers will change June 1st.
