Newtown-Harris Board of Education approves school calendar for next school year

The Newtown-Harris R-3 Board of Education on Monday approved the bell schedule and school calendar for the next school year.

A school representative says the first day of school will be August 24th, and the last day will be May 21st, 2021. Newtown-Harris will have a four day per week schedule and meet Tuesday through Friday most weeks, even though the district is starting school on a Monday next school year. The school day will last from 7:45 to 3:32.

The board approved paying $575.08 toward employee insurance plans through the Ozarks Schools Benefits Association.

A letter of resignation was accepted from Scott Smith with art and the library. All teacher contracts were approved.

FFA competition trips were approved as well as a field trip to the Blank Park Zoo.

Superintendent Lucas McKinnis congratulated the high school basketball teams. The girls won first place in the conference tournament, and both teams were in district competition. He also congratulated Coach Ty Stillwell for winning the conference Girls Coach of the Year.

Grant Oaks and Ashton Meyer participated in the conference band tour. A conference choir tour will be March 23rd, and a performance will be at Newtown-Harris that morning at 9 o’clock.

McKinnis reported the make up intruder drill last month went well, and students and staff responded appropriately. The district is utilizing feedback to make planning more specific and appropriate. He expressed appreciation to Smithfield for sending a representative to talk with students about summer internship opportunities.

The board celebrated member Jack Wells who will retire in April. He has served on the Newtown-Harris Board of Education for 15 years.
