The northwest district of the Missouri Department of Conservation will hold an open house celebration next week in St. Joseph.

MDC will host the event in honor of its 80th anniversary on Tuesday, September 26th. The event is from 5 o’clock until 8 o’clock and is designed for the public to get information and provide feedback on conservation programs. Meet in the Kemper Recital Hall of the Spratt Hall on the Campus of Missouri Western State University, 45-25 Downs Drive in St. Joseph.

A 5 o’clock waterfowl identification workshop will be led by MDC staff. Northwest Missouri hosts some of the state’s finest wetland areas for waterfowl, such as Bob Brown, Nodaway Valley, and Fountain Grove conservation areas.

MDC Director Sara Parker Pauley will be among speakers discussing conservation beginning at 6 pm. Pauley will share insights on the department’s history, conservation priorities, and challenges on the horizon. Local community leaders will also make remarks. MDC personnel will be present to answer questions and take comments from attendees.

Attendees are encouraged to give feedback on conservation department regulations, infrastructure, strategic priorities, and conservation issues. Conservation Commissioner Dave Murphy says whether through gathering input from hunters on deer season regulations, or hikers and birdwatchers on how a conservation area should be managed, public input is valued.

No registration is required for the free event September 26th in St. Joseph. Refreshments will be served. The first 80 attendees at the open house will receive special gift items from Missouri department of conservation.
