The U.S. Military All-Stars are returning to Chillicothe to meet the Mudcats baseball team in the MINK League and to perform a special pre-game salute to the veterans.

The pre-game ceremonies will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Shaffer Memorial Park this Saturday, July 9, and will include a two-part program before the Military All-Stars and the Mudcats take to the field. All veterans, first responders, fire, police, sheriff’s department, ambulance and Highway Patrol will be admitted free.

The Military All-Stars are expected to arrive in Chillicothe around 12 p.m. Saturday and will be given a police escort through the city and then back to the Days Inn where the team and officials will stay after the game and before heading to the Veterans Home in Cameron.

People are asked to line Washington Street (U.S. 65) Saturday around noon and welcome the 18-member group of touring veterans as they go through town. The Military All-Stars will include Mudcat catcher and college player with Northwest Missouri State University, Zach Douglas.

The team will have lunch at Royal Inn Pizza and will be served dinner Saturday evening by Golden Corral, according to Doug Doughty, general manager of the Mudcats.

Wal-Mart, one of the corporate sponsors for the game, has requested the Legion/VFW Color Guard to present the colors and to be on the field for the National Anthem. God Bless America will be sung at the seventh inning stretch and there will be two ceremonial first pitches by representatives of Wal-Mart and Benskin Motors and Advertising, according to Mudcats Operations Manager Jennifer Reeter.

Members of the Color Guard are under the Command of Steve McKiddy and include Tom Douglas, Tom Stuver and Jim Summerville.

Following the 20-minute program and Salute to Veterans by the Military All-Stars, the Mudcats and American Legion/VFW will have a short program to recognize five veterans of the Korean War, Vietnam, a 50-year member of the local American Legion Post and the Vern R. Glick Legionnaire of the Year.

The five veterans Don Underwood, Leo Halverson, Joe Singer, Robert Pigg, and Rev. Bill Bellais will be presented with special hats bearing red, white and blue colors.

Mudcat General Manager Doughty and Operations Manager Jennifer Reeter will present each member of the traveling U.S. Military All-Stars along with the manager and coaches with the special hats as a reminder of their stop in Chillicothe.

All fans attending the game will receive an American flag courtesy of Wal-Mart and the Army National Guard will also be present with lots of giveaways.

Doughty said the Mudcats wanted thank Days Inn for furnishing the visiting All-Stars with motel rooms and Golden Corral and Royal Inn Pizza for feeding the team and the police department for the escort through town and return to the Days Inn.

When the Military All-Stars were at Shaffer Park two years ago around 1,000 fans were present for the outstanding pre-game program and salute to veterans.
