The Mercer County Fire Protection District, Medicine Creek Fire Protection District, and Mercer Fire Protection District responded to Smithfield Badger Farm 5 for a hog confinement fire on Tuesday, March 28.

Mercer County Fire reports the fire went through the roof in the office portion of the facility when crews arrived at the scene of the fire on Route O.

Firefighters made entry to try to keep the fire from spreading down a connecting hallway to the large hog confinement but had to pull out due to unsafe conditions and a partial roof collapse.

Firefighters used a backhoe to knock down the hallway connecting the two buildings as well as pull the metal roof off the building to gain better access.

Crews were on the scene for about five hours fighting the fire and mopping up hot spots.

Mercer County Fire reports it responded with a rescue unit, truck, and tanker to the fire.

Medicine Creek responded with two engines, two tankers, and a brush truck while Mercer responded with two tankers.
