The Livingston County Sheriff is informing area residents of a new scam taking place.

A citizen who had applied for an online job was told the position was work-at-home and a company representative informed the person that they needed to pay over $1,100 for the computer and software to perform the work.

When the resident informed the individual they could not pay that sum, the company requested an application be completed, and a check for $2,500 was then received by the applicant. The intended victim took the check to the bank, who then informed the individual that the check was fraudulent.

Sheriff Steve Cox reports that the scammer would most likely have requested that the victim, upon depositing the check, then send money for the computer and software. Cox says criminals are always coming up with new schemes, and you need to be cautious.
