Lightning strike causes fire, destroys home near Chula

Fire attributed to a lightning strike destroyed the Terry Feeney residence at 12033 Livingston County road 216 near Chula Sunday morning.

Members of the Feeney family were home at the time but got out safely and, there were no injuries.

Assistant Chief Randy Horton of the Chula Rural Fire District reported lightning hit a tree beside the house and entered the residence, which was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

The Chillicothe Fire department assisted the Chula department. Grundy County rural firefighters delivered a load of water to the site.

According to Chillicothe Fire Department Lieutenant Tracy Bradley, a family member said persons there were awakened by something loud, and flames were noticed coming from an outlet and traveling up curtains.

Chula Assistant Chief Horton reported 16-thousand 500 gallons of water were used.

Firefighters were on the scene about four hours.
