Kirksville man airlifted to hospital after crashing into pond near La Plata

A 21-year-old Kirksville man sustained serious injuries in a single-vehicle accident early Friday morning, July 5, on Highway 63, two miles north of La Plata.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. when Trevor A. Benda, driving a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, ran off the right side of the roadway. The vehicle struck an embankment and overturned into a pond. Benda was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Benda was transported by Air Evac to the University Medical Center for treatment of his serious injuries; unfortunately, his injuries were such that he died during transport to the hospital.

The Chevrolet Cobalt was totaled and subsequently towed by Lakeside Towing.

The Adair County Ambulance, Adair County Sheriff’s Department, Kirksville Fire Department, and La Plata Fire Department attended the incident.
