The Chillicothe Fire Department used about 600 gallons of water and two gallons of foam to extinguish a structure fire Thursday night.

Fire Chief Darrell Wright reports that the residence at 1413 Lambert Drive showed heavy smoke and flames when firefighters arrived, and all occupants had evacuated.

He says that crews made an entry on the main floor with a thermal camera and hose line, and the gas and meter were shut off.

Crews located the fire in a back bedroom where flames traveled up the wall and bed area, across the ceiling, and into the attic and that a hole was opened to gain access.

A ventilation fan was placed in the doorway and a window and patio door were opened to help clear smoke.

Firefighters used a second-hand line on the outside to extinguish flames in the eves.

Wright reports that crews cut two ventilation holes in both sides of the roof to eliminate heat to lower carbon monoxide levels.

He says that a female resident said she was in the basement when she heard smoke alarms, went upstairs and was met by two children who told her the room was on fire.

The resident then attempted to put out the flames with baking soda and smother them with a comforter with no success.

Wright adds that after questioning the children, a four-year-old admitted to accidentally catching the bed on fire with a long lighter.

Crews were on the scene about two hours.

The owners of the residence are Ron and Barbara Lame and the occupants are Jared and Katie Van Horn.
