Highway patrol reports multiple drug busts after making vehicle stops on Highway 36

The highway patrol reports about three pounds of marijuana and 15 grams of marijuana edible products were found in the trunk of a car stopped for speeding west of Macon late Friday morning.

That came one day after the patrol reported about one-half pound of marijuana and drug paraphernalia were found in a car stopped for speeding Thursday afternoon west of Macon near Bevier. Both stops were on highway 36.

The driver of the car in the Thursday stop, 24-year old Dalton Coventry of Aurora, Colorado was accused of felony possession of more than 35 grams of marijuana, unlawful use of drug paraphernalia, and exceeding the speed limit.

A passenger in the car stopped on Friday, 19-year-old Yovany Ortiz of Burlington, Iowa claimed ownership of the contraband and was accused of felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

Another passenger in the car stopped Friday, 20-year-old Justin Newman of Burlington, Iowa was accused of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia and possession up to 35 grams of marijuana, both misdemeanors.

The driver of that car, 18-year-old Brendon Bernhart of Burlington, Iowa was accused of driving while suspended and exceeding the speed limit.

Bernhart and Newman both were released on summons.
