An area resident from Green Castle was killed in a rollover accident Wednesday June 1st in Columbia on I-70.

The Columbia Police Department identified the man as Robert Johnston, 60 of Green Castle, Missouri.

According to KOMU, Johnston’s wife, Mary Johnston, was ejected from the car, sustained lacerations to the head, and was taken to a Columbia hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators from the Columbia Police Department indicate the Johnstons’ 1968 Dodge Dart, at some point, crashed into the back of a full-size van.

Johnston’s car was also rear-ended by a semi and pushed into the side of another tractor-trailer.  The impact forced the car into a ditch where it rolled over and partially ejected Robert Johnston.

He was pinned under the car and pronounced dead at the scene.

The Columbia Missourian reports Johnston was wearing a seat belt, but it was just a lap belt because it was such an old car.

A police officer indicated Johnston slid from over or under the lap belt. That is how he was partially ejected.

The funeral service for Robert Johnston will be at noon on Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Kirksville.
