Hamilton residents received a bit of unexpected excitement when a gas main broke on Wednesday.

The gas main, at 602 North Ritchie, caused residents to be evacuated within a one block radius for safety.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene, and utility crews worked to repair the break in the main.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes later in the day.
