A house fire Wednesday afternoon in Chillicothe sent firefighters to 123 Tenth Street where smoke was billowing from the eaves of a one and a half story, single family, residence. A fire department report says the structure was a total loss.

The occupants were listed as Devon and Amy Hand. The owner is Imogene Grouse.  The report from Chillicothe Fire said all occupants were out of the house when firefighters arrived at 12:25 Wednesday.

Fire Chief Darrell Wright noted excessive fire was found in the middle of the house, with rapid extension throughout the structure. While firefighters initially began working inside, it wasn’t safe and they backed out to concentrate on a defensive attack and protect other property – including a neighbor’s house described as close as only five feet away. Damage to the neighbor’s house was limited to some siding that had melted.

The report says the cause of the house fire will be undetermined other than it’s known the wood stove did not cause the fire.  Chillicothe firefighters were at the scene four and a half hours Wednesday.  The location also was monitored throughout the night for hot spots to make sure none of the debris rekindled.

The report added a family pet inside the structure did not make it out. No other injuries were reported. The Red Cross was contacted to assist the family.
