One-hundred-thirty-five cases of influenza had been reported for this season to the Grundy County Health Department of Trenton as of Wednesday afternoon, March 4, 2020.

Epidemiology Specialist Kelli Hillerman says 82 of those cases were Influenza A and 53 have been Influenza B. She calls February the health department’s “busiest month” when it comes to the flu because 91 cases were reported which is about average.

There is widespread flu activity in the country and state. Hillerman notes key indicators tracking the activity remain high, but they are decreasing for the second week in a row.

February is often the peak month, but some years the peak has been later. Hillerman says she cannot accurately predict if this year’s peak has been reached. The first influenza case was reported to the Grundy County Health Department in October, and the department has seen cases through May in past years.

Hillerman encourages residents who have not yet received a flu vaccine for this season to do so as there is still a threat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend everyone at least six months old receive a flu vaccine. The health department offers flu shots at its office Tuesdays.
