The public will have a chance to watch endangered prairie chickens do their sunrise mating dance at Dunn Ranch west of Eagleville starting at the end of this month.

The Missouri Department of Conservation and the Nature Conservancy will offer the chance to watch the male chickens do their courtship dance for the hens from eight blind viewing spots Thursdays through Sundays March 30 through April 23.

Guests will meet a guide at the Dunn Ranch parking lot on Highway M an hour and 15 minutes before sunrise to allow time for the group to hike half a mile to the blind before the prairie chickens arrive on their booming grounds.

Guests will be in the viewing blind a minimum of two hours and visitors should note that there are no restrooms at the blind. Visiting the blind and booming grounds without a guide is not allowed.

Interested individuals need to register and make a reservation by calling MDC’s Northwest Regional Office in Saint Joseph at 816-271-3100.

Participants will receive a registration packet with maps, times, notes about photography, and instructions on what they need to bring.
