Crash near Excelsior Springs kills Carrollton woman, injures four others

One person was fatally injured and four others received serious injuries when a pickup truck overturned on Highway 10 east of Excelsior Springs.

A passenger, 53-year-old Shelly Lewis of Carrollton, was pronounced dead at Research Medical Center in Kansas City about one hour and fifteen minutes after the crash. She had been flown there by a medical helicopter.

The driver of the pickup, 62-year-old Charles Lewis of Carrollton, was flown by medical helicopter to Research Medical Center while a passenger, 37-year old Andrew Schenck of Warrenton, was flown by medical helicopter to Truman Medical Center and passenger, 39-year old Candace Bigby of Wright City was taken by ambulance to North Kansas City Hospital. Another passenger, a 13-year old Wright City girl, was taken by ambulance to Children’s Mercy Hospital. All of those injured received serious injuries during the crash.

The crash happened Saturday morning on Highway 10 at Route Y just east of Excelsior Springs as the westbound pickup went off the right side of the road, began to slide, and then overturned before coming to rest on its wheels.

The truck was demolished with the patrol reporting two of the passengers, Candace Bigby, and the 13-year old girl were not wearing seat belts while the other three occupants were using seat belts.
