Chillicothe firefighters were on the scene of a grass fire Saturday morning in southern Livingston County using approximately 125 gallons of water at 15056 Road 3048.

Assistant Chief Eric Reeter said about five acres were on fire when firefighters arrived at the Tom Reger residence. Reeter noted Reger was burning off the area when the wind changed direction.  No property damage and no injuries were noted.

The Hale Fire Department was called for mutual aid.

Firefighters were then called to the Caseys General Store in northern Chillicothe Saturday evening where they found smoke and a pile of smoldering towels on the floor of the women’s restroom.

Fire Chief Darrell Wright said a customer had used a fire extinguisher to put out the blaze before firefighters arrived at the location at 2600 North Washington. The witnesses stated the fire was in a trash can and had caught paper towels above the trash can on fire.

Damage was confined to a paper towel dispenser and trash can, with smoke damage to the entire room. The fire department was unable to determine how the fire started, and the incident was turned over to the Chillicothe Police Department for further investigation.

Firefighters were on the scene approximately 30 minutes.
