A rural Cainsville man has been charged in Putnam County with felonious restraint, armed criminal action, and unlawfully exhibiting a handgun.

35-year old Mark Bottcher of rural cainsville was taken into custody Wednesday night about 15 miles west of Unionville along Highway 136 where a sport utility vehicle had stopped with a flat tire.

In a probable cause statement, a highway patrol trooper indicated he was informed by Putnam County dispatching that the SUV had a flat tire and motorists stopped to assist. However, the patrol report indicated the motorist noticed a knife outside the vehicle, numerous guns in the backseat, and a passenger who looked distressed. So the female who stopped to assist left the scene and called 911.

The highway patrolman arrived at the scene and observed a white male outside the vehicle and a white female in the passenger seat. The patrolman said he made contact with the female in the SUV.

The patrolman reported the female passenger, 31-year old Christina Green, said Bottcher had a firearm pointed at her head and refused to let her leave the vehicle, after driving for a period of time, they had to pull over because of a flat tire. The patrol quoted Ms. Green as saying, when the motorist pulled over to assist, Bottcher told Ms. Green to be quiet or everyone would pay.

Ms. Green reported Bottcher had placed a gun in his pants for Ms. Green to see so she did not exit the vehicle when he was changing the tire. She further told authorities she had tried to exit the vehicle but Bottcher would not let her, and that she was scared for her life and did not want to be in the vehicle with Bottcher.

Both Bottcher and Ms. Green were taken to the Putnam County sheriff’s office for questioning. Afterward, Ms. Green was released while Bottcher was arrested and accused of armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and felonious restraint.

Charges accusing Bottcher with those counts were filed in Associate Division of Putnam County circuit court by Prosecutor Thomas Keedy.

In the felonious restraint charge, Bottcher is accused of unlawfully restraining Christina Green and exposing her to a substantial risk of serious physical injury.

In the armed criminal action count, Bottcher is accused of committing felonious restraint with the use of a deadly weapon.

In the unlawful use of a weapons charge, Bottcher is accused of exhibiting a handgun in an angry or threatening manner while in the presence of one or more persons.

Bond was set at 30-thousand dollars cash only.
