A Brookfield man has been charged in Caldwell County following what Livingston County Sheriff Steve Cox described as a high-speed chase of a vehicle going the wrong way on U. S. Highway 36.

Online court information indicates 58-year-old Robert Shiflett faces the felonies of driving while intoxicated—aggravated and resisting arrest, detention, or stop by fleeing creating a substantial risk of serious physical injury or death to any person. He also faces misdemeanors of exceeding the posted speed limit and possession of marijuana or synthetic cannabinoid.

Shiflett is scheduled for the Associate Division of Caldwell County Circuit Court on Thursday at 10 am.

Deputy John Stafford began the chase west of Wheeling when a vehicle jumped the median and stopped west of Utica, as the driver distanced himself from the deputy and got out of direct sight.

A probable cause statement from the Highway Patrol says the vehicle, driven by Shiflett, was checked going 108 miles per hour, observed crossing over the center line several times, failed to stop for an emergency vehicle, and drove recklessly with disregard for other motorists.

The pursuit reportedly ended when the vehicle struck spike strips, the tires started coming apart, and the driver pulled to the shoulder, exited, placed himself on the ground with his hands above his head, and was taken into custody by a Caldwell County Sheriff’s deputy and a Patrol sergeant. The sergeant noted it appeared Shiflett had ingested drugs and was having a medical problem, and prescription opioids were found while searching his vehicle.

Emergency medical services were summoned, Narcan was administered to assist with the possibility of an opioid overdose, and an ambulance transported Shiflett to the emergency room for treatment.

Shiflett has been arrested four times for driving while intoxicated and had one pending driving while intoxicated charge.
