The Trenton High School boy’s tennis squad was competitive as a team can be without grabbing a team win on Monday afternoon, battling in four separate 9-8 head-to-head duels before falling to the host Benton Cardinals, 5-4 at Noyes Court in St. Joseph.

Out of the four 9-8 matches (three singles and one in doubles), Trenton lost three of those.  The only victory in that scenario for the Bulldogs came from Jacob Davis at #1 singles, in a win over Bostyn Horn.  Benton’s #4 singles player, Enzo Martins, beat Bryce Whitney while Josten Hailey (#6 singles) beat Creed Houghton, both by 9-8 finals.

Trenton’s #3 singles player, Kade Ockenfels, downed Austin Turner 8-3, and Wyatt Neal of THS, at #5 singles, downed Wyatt Phillips, 8-5.  Benton’s Payton Redemer downed Trenton’s Nick Shields in the #2 singles match, 8-3.

Tied at 3-3, the match came down to doubles, with Benton clinching the duel with a 8-4 win for the #1 team of Horn and Redemer (over Davis and Whitney), while Turner and Martins (#2 doubles) beat Ockenfels and Neal by the 9-8 tiebreak.

Trenton’s #3 doubles team of Shields and Houghton doubled up Phillips and Hailey 8-4.

The season record for the Bulldogs drops to 0-2, while Benton surges to 1-2.

The Trenton JV picked up four singles victories in as many matches, with Dylan May sweeping Calen Taylor 6-love, Zack Maberry claiming a 6-4 win over Spencer Hendrix, C.J. Sibbit taking a 6-2 win over Taylor, and Dillon Parrack taking down Hendrix 6-1.
