Department heads and Trenton City Council Finance Committee members have been working over the past few weeks to develop budgets for the city of Trenton and Trenton Municipal Utilities. The next fiscal year for 2020-21 begins May 1st.

City Administrator/Utility Director Ron Urton spoke Tuesday with Open Line Moderator John Anthony.

The current recommendation regarding raises also establishes incremental levels of compensation for employees dependent on their responsibilities, experience, and education. Hiring new employees also can cause wages to increase due to training that’s required to be a water plant operator and work in public safety.

Urton noted a water plant operator has been hired but positions remain open for police officers. The finance committee meets Thursday evening at 5:30 to discuss the proposed budgets with any recommendations to be presented at a future city council meeting.

The advance agenda for Thursday’s night council meeting includes ordinances and bids but no mention of the budgets. Ordinances at Trenton get approved with at least five affirmative roll call votes of the council – a minimum of five members will need to be physically present at city hall Thursday night for the 7 pm meeting. The public is invited to view the meetings via the web application called Zoom.
