Area citizens can refresh their driving skills, and have the opportunity to save money on their car insurance with the AARP Safe Driver course being offered in Macon later this month.

The course is scheduled at the Senior Center, 1604 Maffry Avenue, in Macon Wednesday, October 25th from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm.

Participants also get an AARP Smart Driver Guidebook with suggestions, lists, and references.

The Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety Northeast Region is promoting the course by encouraging Missouri drivers to take the course.

The first 20 registrants will have their course fee paid. This saves the participant up to $20. Those interested also may receive a discount on car insurance, depending on their insurance carrier’s policies.

The Safe Driver course curriculum was developed following a two-year research study conducted by Eastern Virginia Medical School. It’s aimed at helping drivers stay current with driving laws and the new technologies inside and outside of vehicles. Participants also learn defensive driving skills, other safety strategies and how to manage and accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time.

There are no tests required to pass the course. The course at Macon is open to drivers of all ages and costs $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Participants can register by calling 573-761-5193.  Participants should register by phone, then bring their driver’s licenses.  Members also should take their AARP cards.
